DisplayLink
DisplayLink USB Graphics technology allows for expanding beyond the onboard GPU of your Mac. The DisplayLink software acts as a virtual display on the host system, detecting monitors connected through a DisplayLink device as a normal display. The display signal generated by the host system is then encoded by the DisplayLink driver. The DisplayLink chip in the docking station decodes the data and sends it to the connected displays.

DP Alt Mode
USB-C supports the transmission of non-USB data via a feature known as Alt Mode. DP Alt Mode transfers DisplayPort display signals over USB-C using this feature. DP Alt Mode docks use the onboard graphics processing of the system to output a DisplayPort video signal over USB-C.
Mac computers support SST (Single Stream Transport) using DP Alt Mode. DP Alt Mode Docking Stations use MST (Multi Stream Transport) to drive multiple displays from a single DisplayPort connection. When you connect a DP Alt Mode MST docking station to a MacBook it allows for one extended display and any other supported displays to be clones.

DisplayLink + DP Alt Mode
Using a combination of DisplayLink technology and DP Alt Mode allows expansion up to 3 extended displays from a USB-C equipped Mac. Displays connected to the DisplayLink chipset of the dock are encoded by the system and are sent as USB data decoded by the dock. The display connected to the DP Alt Mode port of the dock is transmitted over USB-C using DP Alt Mode.

Thunderbolt™ 4
The systems onboard GPU outputs an uncompressed video stream that is transmitted to the docking station. Thunderbolt™ 4 has dedicated DisplayPort transmission lanes and support of up to 2 x 4K 60Hz displays @ 10-bit color. In addition, Thunderbolt™ 4 docks support high speed data transfer, and you can connect an external Thunderbolt SSD to expand storage. Thunderbolt™ 4 docks are backwards compatible with Thunderbolt™ 3 equipped MacBook systems.
